What is VMQ?
For many sealing solutions, we use VMQ, which can also be used as a LSR (Liquid Silicone Rubber) material. But what exactly is a VMQ or LSR material? Silicone (VMQ) is a group of elastomers made of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. Silicone compounds (VMQ) are characterized by
Extreme temperature range
Very malleable behavior
Excellent resistance to overstretching
Low temperature elasticity
Easy to color according to RAL number
Single-layer transparent elastomers
Specially developed types
As a group of elastomers, VMQ has relatively low tensile strength, severe limited chemical resistance and low abrasion resistance. For these reasons, VMQ materials can only be used statically. Special types have been developed because of their excellent heat resistance and high insulation values. All available types with very specific properties cannot usually be compared one-to-one with the values of conventional rubbers.
What is VMQ resistant to?
Depending on the type chosen, VMQ can be used in different markets thanks to the diversity of its resistances. Depending on the type chosen, VMQ can resist.
Hot air (very good)
Ozone (very good)
UV radiation (very good)
Engine and transmission oils (good - moderate)
Animal and vegetable oils and fats (good - moderate)
Some brake fluids (good - moderate)
Mineral oils (good - moderate)
VMQ (Silopren®)
Excellent resistance to temperature extremes
In general, silicones have excellent resistance to temperature extremes from -50°C to +232°C (-58°F to +450°F). Special VMQ types are available for even higher system temperatures up to 275°C and short-term light exposure above 300°C. Silicones maintain better performance at high and low temperatures than most other elastomers.
Electrically insulating, conductive or flame retardant
Silicones can be specifically formulated to be electrically insulating, conductive or flame retardant. Many silicones shrink more than normal during the vulcanization process, so silicone product molds are often sized differently than other elastomer molds.
VMQ recommended for static sealing applications
VMQ materials have a relatively low core resistance and high coefficient of friction and are therefore recommended for static sealing applications only. After post-treatment, silicones do not emit any odor or taste and are very clean, making them particularly suitable for many food and medical applications.
